A Smelly Idea for the Wallstreet Journal

In an article in Advertising Age there is talk about the Wallstreet Journal putting "rub and sniff" ads in their paper. Opposed to current magazines that have sample perfumes and colognes on a peel back panel Wallstreet Journal wants to take scratch and sniff to an easier level. New deas are springing up for new scents to be put into the readers nose. It is predicted that the idea of "rub and sniff" will take off in the advertising industry. You can view this entire article HeRe

Rub and Sniff sounds like a great idea to me. I think this is just to boost sales for the Wallstreet Journal because everyone knows that unless you are into buisness stuff the paper is boring!!! Like magazines with peel back panel for sampling perfumes, I feel this idea will take off! In the article it mentioned that they would have different scents for different ads for example an Ocean Breeze smell for a ad for traveling to the Carribian and a chocolate smell for candy bars and such. I think the whole idea is very unique and it should be supported.

The Future of News...a little spacey?

In an article writen by the editor of local news for The Spokesman Review it explains that the future of available news is currently in the process of undergoing some serious changes. Many print newspapers are planning to do away with their costly publishing and considering putting all breaking news on the internet, which allows readers to interactively respond to stories via blogging. "Newspapers will survive, but they'll look much different than they do today....containing mostly context and analysis," says Carla Savalli, the senior editor of local news for The Spokesman Review. News will be viewed much like it is on websites like YouTube (a video sharing website.) Several print news companines are considering this alternative because it enavitably saves moeny for the cost of paper and ink, and researchers feel it interacts with readers on a more personal level. Drastic changes are expected in the next ten years. You can view the article"The Future of the Newsroom" : here

Personally, I feel that news via the internet is a great idea. I think it will save money and it better organizes current events. I have heard many people say that they no longer watch the news because it's depressing or they're tired of hearing the same old things. Well, if news is put on the internet all one would have to do is search a topic and view a broadcast or report. I also feel that breaking news would reach the public alot faster, and punctual news is better news. People wouldn't have to wait until the next mornings paper or the eleven o'clock news to hear about a recent accident. On the other hand, personally coming from a family with limited means, my step-father reads the paper everyday, and my mom doesn't own a computer. While I feel it is a good idea as far as organizing, I dont feel that my step-father or anyone who enjoys reading should not have that oppertunity because they do not own a computer. If they were planning to recycle old computers and make them cheaper for the public and make paying for the internet cheaper....well....that's a whole other story. In conclusion, news via the internet is great, but lets not forget about the people who dont own computers.

It's Worth the Shot!

It is obvious, that in 2007 younger generations are not reading books and magazines nearly as much as they were in recent years. Several technologies and social acceptance standards have raised, leaving the average kid little time to sit at home and read. Free subscriptions to online print are being given to students in hopes to intrigue them to read more. Internet users are getting younger each year. My five year old little sister can surf the net (parental controlled of course) and find what she needs (the Disney Channel website, usually). I think if students are getting free subscriptions to a foreign language magazine online, they'll check it out while they're surfing, and if they don't I think it's a great idea and it's worth the shot----Jennifer Edwards

Five magazines giving away subscriptions to five magazines on five campuses — not to the print but to digital facsimiles of the print — in an effort to get these darned kids to read mags. Paint me dubious. Reading PDFs or equivalents is a pain. Either go online fully or don’t. There’s no wading into this new world, only a deepend. ----http://www.buzzmachine.com/?tag=magazines
